Exchange on legislative initiative and drafting with the Senate of Côte d’Ivoire

From 29 June to 1 July 2022, two staff members from the French Senate and German Bundesrat met with 31 Senators and staff from the Legislative and Oversight Department of the Ivorian Senate in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The three-day mission allowed for detailed discussions around the initiation and drafting of legislation and amendments, with the aim to respond to the Legislative and Oversight Department’s request to co-develop a guide to encourage Senators to initiate legislation and inform the legislative drafting process for parliamentary staff.

A Drafting Committee composed of staff from the Legislative and Oversight Department, two staff members from the German Bundesrat, and one staff member from the French Senate was created and will be working extensively on developing guides on legislative and amendment writing in the next few months.

By the end of the visit, the Legislative and Oversight Department, with support from both European partners, was able to present two guide structures to the Senators as well as agree on a calendar for the co-development of the practical guides.
